Iconic – A Zine

Project Dates

A 16 page zine about LiveJournal icons, design and aesthetic of the 2000s with short contextual essays and dozens of original icons from the era that were created by me in the early to mid-2000s.

Overview

For those of a certain age, it was almost a requirement to have a LiveJournal. Not everyone got into the design side of LiveJournal, though, and for me, it was essential to my development as an artist and a designer.

I put this zine together on a bit of a whim, realizing that I wanted to start sharing some of my memories and experiences around my earliest days on the web and the culture and community that existed back then. I hope to create more of these and then collect them all into something longer and create a book out of it.

Some of the icons reflect some of my interests back then, but also show some of the commissions I did for others, as was custom at the time. There was a true sense of community developed around these icons that seems hard to explain now, but you can discover a little more about it by reading the zine, which is available for purchase and download on itch.io.

A few of the details...

Every icon featured in the zine is an original icon created by me while I was learning Photoshop. One of the ways that I taught myself design skills was by immersing myself in the design community on LiveJournal.

Take a look...

Each of the icons or graphics in this zine was made by me between 2002-2007 as I was learning Photoshop. They are a look back at a bit of the lost internet, a tiny scrap that I have managed to save, but it is also the origins of my career as a designer. The community of icon makers was so exceptionally supportive of each other learning and growing in their skills, it was an essential part of my foundation as a designer.
