Over the past ten years, I have led focus groups, interviews, developed surveys, conducted cardsorting exercises and assisted with the UX design of more than 300 websites and worked with countless innovators and scientists. I’ve created apps for new parents, participated in Hackathons with MIT’s Hacking Medicine, Brigham Digital Innovation Hub and the Children’s Hospital Hackathon, where my team’s prototype for a physical therapy video game for children won several prizes.
My approach to user experience design is generally very hands-on. I want to talk to your stakeholders, your audience, your users and find out what their needs are and how we can identify and mitigate potential pain points before rolling out the design. I work with scientists and physicians every single day, translating design concepts, pitching ideas, collaborating and engaging them on how design and communications tools can elevate their research and their careers.
I also am a big believer in doing the research – some of which can be hands on, some of which is more about going through previous documentation, looking at best practices for a given industry and identifying strengths and gaps when it comes to content and process. Part of my training involved conducting field work and gathering and analyzing data for criminology studies, as a Criminal Justice student at Northeastern University, including on race and justice, focusing on racial profiling in policing. As part of this work, I became well acquainted with how bias can be baked into design. I also learned how to collect and analyze data that provides real context that can spur action and engagement from an audience.
In my role as Creative Designer & Web Media Manager for the Brigham Research Institute, I have designed and creative directed materials for more than 500 events over the past decade. As part of my job, I am responsible for creative directing each event and then designing the materials. I work closely with a design co-op in a mentor capacity as well. Past students have gone on to design positions at Nike, Puma, Reebok and Saucony.
I use Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator daily, with a few other programs (Camtasia, Premiere, Clip Studio Paint) depending on the needs of a project.
